Beginnings
Every journey has to have a beginning. This is where I found mine:
I was surfing the internet on YouTube, and I came across a video that was all about the minimalist lifestyle. The start of the video was literally the creator laying on the floor and saying that it was his bed. Then, he continued to go to the kitchen to make his breakfast, with literally one fork, one knife, and one spoon. He sat at a table with one chair, and the rest of the kitchen was empty. He then started filming the "talk". He explained that the minimalist lifestyle did not need to be too extreme. Just a few days or hours later, I watched another video talking about what it means to be a minimalist and what is reasonable in that sense. From these videos alone, I realized that having a minimalist lifestyle could help me clear out my mind along with my belongings and keep my focus on what keeps me going.
Over the years I have taken the time to evaluate my possessions. I complete routine purges where I get rid of clothes and belongings that I never use anymore. The problem is, I am still a maximalist compared to many of the minimalist personalities out there. There was a long list of things that I owned that I felt I could not part with, or I did not even know where to start. I was struggling with deciding how I knew when something was worth getting rid of compared to what was worth keeping. I did not know what was worth spending my money on.
The first step I took was taking the time to journal. I recorded what I did in a day and what tools I used as I went throughout my day. I looked throughout the whole house and recorded every individual possession my family had. I was surprised by how many pages the list of possessions took up alone. I was also shocked to see how little of the items I was using on a regular basis.
So, I began my search for how to become a minimalist in the best way possible. Thank you for coming along for the journey! I hope we can learn so much side by side.
